We are proud to share that Smith Jewish Academy siblings Mila and Ezra A. each received Honorable Mention in the inaugural L’Dor V’Dor Essay Prize, sponsored by USCJ and Exploring Judaism.
The national contest invited young writers to sit down with grandparents or elders and reflect on how Jewish life, learning, and identity are passed l’dor v’dor — from generation to generation. Mila’s and Ezra’s essays beautifully capture those conversations, weaving together personal family stories with thoughtful reflections on Conservative Judaism, community, and continuity.
Mila (Grade 6) explored her close relationship with her baubie, reflecting on how Jewish learning, synagogue life, and the opportunity to become a b’nei mitzvah shaped multiple generations of her family — and how she is carrying those values forward as she prepares for her own bat mitzvah. Ezra (Class of ’25) examined his grandfather’s evolving Jewish journey, highlighting the power of modeling, choice, and community in shaping a vibrant Jewish life across generations.
Their essays stood out among submissions from teens and young adults across the country for their depth, honesty, and insight. This recognition is a powerful example of what Smith students do so well: think critically, write thoughtfully, and engage meaningfully with Jewish tradition, family history, and lived experience.
Mazal tov to Mila and Ezra on this well-deserved honor!
